Years 3 and 4, Teaching Block 2
You will take a 40CP project:
- In your final year, that is Y3 BSc or Y4 MEng, you do an individual project.
- In Y3 of the MEng, you do the Team Project (unofficially known as games project).
If you are on the MEng and want to leave after Y3, you can do this and get a BSc. The Team Project then counts as your final project ‘for honours’.
There is a special case for MEng students to skip the Team Project which gets you an MSci instead but still lets you do a 4-year degree. Speak to the school office or your personal tutor as there are some complicated things you need to know about this option.
Alongside the final project, you will take one 20CP mini-project which will be assessed by a single piece of coursework, and possibly unit-specific extras such as a presentation or viva around the coursework.
This means you will not have any exams in the summer exam period.
Mini-Projects
In each year, you pick one of these topics for your 20CP mini-project:
Topic | Requires |
---|---|
Advanced Computer Architecture | |
Applied Cryptology | Cryptology |
Applied Data Science | Machine Learning |
CGI | |
High Performance Computing | |
Interactive Devices |
With a few constraints:
- You cannot pick the same topic in both Y3 and Y4 (on the MEng).
- You cannot pick Applied Cryptology and High-Performance Computing in the same year. This is due to a timetabling clash.
- Two of the units have a prerequisite that you must have taken either in TB1 this year, or (on the MEng) in TB1 of the previous year.
The level of achievement to get a particular mark (e.g. get a First, or 2.i) is generally higher in Y4 than in Y3. Y4 students might also be asked to do extra tasks in their coursework. The teaching is shared between the years, but your unit director can tell you what the merking criteria are depending on whether you take the unit in year 3 or 4. If you are on the MEng and already know which two units you want to take, you can take this into account when you decide which unit to pick for Y3 versus Y4.
